The traditional illuminated Christmas trees
This year, Christmas 2007, we have had many questions about the
lack of illuminated Christmas trees on the balconies. The main reason
for this is the dwindling support year by year for the trees. More
loyal participants have withdrawn their support this year. There
have been complaints in recent years about damage caused to balconies
and canopies, and also sparking from electrical connections. Regrettably,
the time had come to consider alternatives.
The main alternative of trees on the lamp posts
was rejected by the council, on the basis that our lamp posts are
not securely rooted. Because of extensive vaults under the pavements,
the lamp posts are held in place by shallow flanges, making them
prone to toppling over.
Realistically our only remaining
alternative was illuminated displays stretching across the street
for Christmas 2007. If these illuminations are well received then
we can expand the number of fittings for Christmas 2008, funds permitting.
